When Wichita was first incorporated in 1870, it was a destination for cattle drives, which explains its “Cowtown”. In 1886, Wichita was incorporated as a city, and became the region’s principal city.

In the 20th century, pioneers of the aircraft industry began projects that would lead to Wichita’s turning into the “Air Capital of the World.” In 1917, the Cessna Comet was the first airplane that was manufactured in Wichita. The city continues to be a leading producer of commercial aircraft.

Further east is Chisholm Creek, which joins the Arkansas in the far southern part of the city. And to the south is Gypsum Creek. Among the wonderful ways to enjoy the outdoors in Wichita are dozens of parks, golf courses and walking paths, not to mention the impressive Sedgwick County Park which holds the Sedgwick County Zoo.
